Articles are words that are often used at the beginning of noun phrases. They refer to the shared understanding between speakers as to what they are specifying. 

There are two types of articles:
1. Indefinite articles: "A" and "an" are used to refer to an unspecified or unknown noun. "A" is used before a consonant sound, and "an" is used before a vowel sound.
2. Definite article: "The" is used to refer to a specific noun. "The" is used before singular countable nouns, plural countable nouns, and uncountable nouns.
