A relational database management system (RDBMS) stores data in tables, which are organized into columns, and each column stores one type of data. The data for a single instance of a table is stored as a row. The primary key identifies each row in the table. Each column of the table holds attributes of the data, and each record usually has a value for each attribute. RDBMSs include functions that maintain the security, accuracy, integrity, and consistency of the data.

The fundamental physical element of an RDBMS is a block. In Microsoft SQL Server, the fundamental unit of storage is a page, which is 8 KB in size. Everything is stored in page-sized chunks.
