Compound vapour compression refrigeration systems use a method called intercooling to cool the superheated vapor refrigerant before feeding it to the second stage of compression. Liquid refrigerant is often used for intercooling in multi-stage ammonia plants, but not in multi-stage R-12 plants. 

Compound compression is used when the compression ratio is high to reduce the input power for a refrigeration system. Multi-stage compression has a lower temperature of the refrigerant gas after compression than single stage compression. 

Other types of vapour compression refrigeration systems include:
Absorption:
Includes all the processes in the vapor compression refrigeration system, such as compression, condensation, expansion, and evaporation. In this process, the refrigerant produces a cooling effect in an evaporator and releases heat to the atmosphere via the condenser.
Cascade refrigeration: Combines two single stage vapor compression systems together. The condenser of LTC and evaporator of HTC is cascaded and forms the heat exchanger.
Vapor compression cycles: The most widely used cooling systems, including air conditioning and refrigeration applications.
