Biomass is a renewable energy source that can be converted into energy. It's made from organic matter, such as agricultural waste, forest residues, and municipal solid waste. 

Some properties of biomass that affect its performance as a fuel: Heating value, Moisture content, Ash content, Susceptibility to slagging and fouling, Volatiles content. 
Biomass has a low heating value and contains more oxygen and less carbon than solid fossil fuels. It also has a lower energy density than fossil fuels. 

Biomass can be burned to generate heat, which can then be converted into energy. However, solid biomass has a much lower energy content than fossil fuels. 

Biomass fuels can be categorized as woody fuels and animal wastes. Municipal solid waste (MSW) is also a source of biomass fuel. 

Common forms of solid biomass are: Agricultural crops, Crop residue, Forestry products. 

Examples of biomass sources for energy are:
- Wood and wood processing waste
- Lumber and furniture mill sawdust and waste
- Black liquor from pulp and paper mills
