Energy resources can be classified into three categories:
Renewable:
Resources that can be replenished through natural or human efforts, or have inexhaustible reserves. Examples include wind energy, geothermal energy, and photovoltaics.
Fossil: Resources that come from dead plants and animals. Fossil fuels are a type of fossil energy resource, and are typically categorized as coal, oil, and natural gas.
Nuclear: A type of energy resource.

Energy resources can also be classified as conventional or non-conventional:
Conventional:
Energy resources that have been used for a long time, such as coal, petroleum, and fuel. Conventional sources are non-renewable.
Non-conventional: Energy resources that are considered modern, such as solar energy, tidal energy, and wind energy.

Non-renewable energy uses up resources that cannot be recreated. Examples include gas and coal.
