Sustainable development considers environmental, economic, and societal factors to achieve a balance while improving the quality of life.

The three main objectives of sustainable development are:
- Economic growth
- Human needs, equity, and social cohesion
- Reducing pollution

Sustainable energy development is a concept based on the 'principle of intergenerational justice'. It involves meeting the energy needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Environmental sustainability is the process of meeting the needs for air, food, water, and shelter, while ensuring the environment is not affected or polluted. Economic sustainability is about providing people with what they want without compromising the quality of life.
Sustainable economic growth can be achieved when the relative contribution rate of environment protection investment to environmental quality is greater than the relative contribution rate of combined input of energy and environment to production.
Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) and Energy-Environment-Economy (E3) models aim to provide policy-relevant insights into global environmental change and sustainable development issues.
