India has seven geothermal provinces and more than 340 geothermal springs. The Geological Survey of India has discovered around 340 hot springs across the country. The geothermal provinces of India have the potential to generate around 10,600 MW of electricity. As of 2023, India's geothermal power generation capacity stands at 10 MW. The Indian government has set a target of achieving 10,000 MW of geothermal power by 2030.
Some of the prominent geothermal resources include Puga Valley and Chhumathang in Jammu and Kashmir, Manikaran in Himachal Pradesh, Jalgaon in Maharashtra and Tapovan in Uttarakhand. A new location of geothermal power energy has also been found in Tattapani in Chhattisgarh.

Note: Individual productive geothermal wells generally yield between 2MW and 5MW of electricity. Each may cost from $1 million to $5 million to drill.
