(1) Mount Rushmore is a popular tourist destination in South Dakota. (2) The faces of four former presidents are carved into the side of the mountain. (3) Each face is approximately 60 feet high. (4) The presidents featured are: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. (5) Theodore Roosevelt was the 26th president. (6) The carving was begun in 1927 and completed in 1941. (7) It was carved by Gutzon and Lincoln Borglum. (8) Mount Rushmore was previously known to the Lakota Sioux as Six Grandfathers, part of the path of the spiritual journey of one of their elders. (9) It is located in the disputed Black Hills region. (10) Another memorial, the Crazy Horse memorial, depicting the Lakota warrior Crazy Horse, is being constructed nearby, with varying levels of support from nearby tribes. (11) Mount Rushmore, like other mountains in the region, is composed of granite rock.
