Workplace Safety
This section from a company manual gives employees instructions on how to avoid a painful workplace injury called carpal tunnel syndrome.
Carpal tunnel syndrome, a nerve disorder in the hand, can be caused by the repetitive movements of typing on the computer. The syndrome is a form of RSI, repetitive strain injury. If you feel pain, numbness, or tingling in your wrists or hands, please notify your supervisor and go to a doctor immediately. Other early signs are shooting pains from the wrist up the arm or a burning feeling in the fingers. Early treatment can help prevent serious harm.
We provide ergonomic keyboards, designed for comfort and safety. There are also things you can do to avoid the problem. Adjust computer screens and keyboards to reduce strain. Your keyboard should be elbow level so that your forearms, wrists, and hands are in line with, or parallel to, the floor. Please use the wrist pads provided by every keyboard and mouse. We also urge you to review and use the enclosed exercises that reduce strain and the risk of carpal tunnel syndrome.
If you choose to wear a wrist brace, please shop for one on our doctor-approved list or one that your own doctor recommends. Some of the braces sold inhibit muscle use more than necessary, which is also not good for muscle health. The recommended braces are proven safe and effective. If you have any questions, please call Human Resources.
