A sort of feudal system in the Americas which provided the peninsulares with land and a specified number of native laborers. Natives were meant to be protected, but they would be put at the bottom of the social structure with slaves. Another problem with the system was the resentment of the children of the peninsulares--the creoles--who couldn't reach the same status as their parents. This group used the repressed population of slaves and natives to revolt from European rule.
