Russia had two revolutions in 1917, caused--in part--by World War I. In February, Czar Nicholas II was forced to abdicate, replaced by a Provisional Government, which was divided and ineffectual. This allowed a second revolution in November, when a small group of communists called the Bolsheviks took over, eventually creating the first communist government based on the ideas of Karl Marx world history.
