1. What does the term 'Muslim' mean ? What does 'umma' ? How are two ideas connected in Islam ?

The term 'Muslim' means one who submits. The term 'umma' means a community of believers. Two ideas are connected in Islam because people who embraced the worldwide view were called Muslims, because they submitted to the will of God and became part of the umma.
Abu Bakr was Muhammad's father-in-law and the first caliph after Muhammad passed away. We care about him in the study of Islamic history because it dived Islam into two major sects : Suuni and Shi'a. The Suunis Muslims believed Abu Bakr was rightly elected first caliph,while the Shi'a Muslims believed it should have been Ali, Muhammad's son-in-law.
Before the arrival of Islam, the Arabian Peninsula was a crazy 'religious melting pot.' Most tribal Arabs worshiped gods very similar to Mesopotamian gods. By the time of Muhammad, cult statues of many gods had been collected in his hometown of Mecca in a temple-like structure called Kaaha.
When Muhammad started to preach Islam, the idea of monotheism was not new to the Arabian Peninsula because Arabia was a home for monotheisms like Christianity, Judaism, and a little bit of Zoroastrianism. The message that there is only one god wasn't surprising to Muhammad.
