How do historians find out more about artifacts from the past?

As elementary school children develop their understanding of what history means, they start asking logical questions, the answers to which will further their understanding of a particular area or topic. They may also understand how the past can be represented in many different ways, such as documents, paintings or artifacts, and this may help to aim their questioning in a sensible direction.
