Some of the first engines that didn't rely on human or animal power were steam engines, in which water is boiled and turned into steam that then interacts with the engine to generate energy. In one kind of steam engine, the steam turns rotating parts of the machine called turbines and generates energy, as shown in the simplified diagram below.
