Common Core Math (K–2) Exam Survival Guide

Kindergarten (K) Math

Must-do

  • Counting & Cardinality: count to 100 by 1s/10s; count objects (≤20); compare numbers.
  • Operations & Algebraic Thinking: add/subtract within 10 with objects/drawings.
  • Number & Operations in Base Ten: compose/decompose numbers 11–19 into tens + ones.
  • Measurement & Data: describe/compare lengths, weights; classify objects; simple charts.
  • Geometry: name/describe 2D/3D shapes; position words (above/below/next to).

Top traps

  • “Counting objects” drift (double-count/skip); confusing 13 vs “thirteen”.
  • Treating teen numbers as ones (forgetting “ten and ___”).
  • Shape naming by size/orientation (a rotated square ≠ diamond).

Quick checks

  • Show 14 counters—“How many? How many tens? How many ones?”
  • Flash 5-frame/10-frame: “How many more to make 10?”
  • Shape sort: circles/squares/triangles (oddly oriented).

You will make

  • Tens-and-Ones Mat (two boxes labeled T/ O) + counters.
  • Shape Hunt Booklet (photos/drawings of shapes at home/school).
  • Number Path (1–20 floor tape path for hop-counting).

Practice plan (15 min/day)

  • 5 min number routine (counting chain; teen number talk).
  • 5 min hands-on (ten-frame games).
  • 5 min shape/measure talk & quick chart.
