Introduction

In the GATE exam, the paper is split into two main parts:

  • General Aptitude (GA) – 10 questions, 15 marks
  • Engineering Mathematics + Core Subject – 55 questions, 85 marks

You will see three types of questions in GATE:

  • MCQ – Multiple Choice Questions (one correct option)
  • MSQ – Multiple Select Questions (one or more correct options)
  • NAT – Numerical Answer Type (you type the answer as a number)

General Aptitude (GA) – Overview

The General Aptitude section is common for all GATE papers.
It always carries 15 marks out of 100, no matter which branch you are from.

The GA syllabus is divided into four broad areas:

  1. Quantitative Aptitude
  2. Verbal Aptitude
  3. Analytical Aptitude
  4. Spatial Aptitude

1. Quantitative Aptitude – Topics

This part checks your comfort with numbers and basic math ideas, including:

  • Numerical computation and estimation
  • Ratios and percentages
  • Powers, exponents, and logarithms
  • Permutations and combinations
  • Series
  • Mensuration and geometry
  • Elementary statistics
  • Probability

2. Verbal Aptitude – Topics

This part checks basic English usage and understanding:

  • Basic English grammar
  • Tenses
  • Articles
  • Prepositions
  • Conjunctions
  • Adjectives
  • Verb–noun agreement
  • Basic vocabulary, words, idioms, and phrases

3. Analytical Aptitude – Topics

This area tests logical thinking and patterns, such as:

  • Logic: deduction and induction
  • Analogy
  • Numerical relations
  • Reasoning

4. Spatial Aptitude – Topics

This part deals with visual and shape-based thinking:

  • Transformation of shapes
  • Translation and rotation
  • Scaling and mirroring
  • Assembling and grouping
  • Cutting and paper-folding patterns
  • Patterns in 2D and 3D
