What is Anarchism?
Anarchism is an ideology which has at its heart the aim of liberating people from political domination and economic exploitation. Anarchism is defined by its rejection of the state and all forms of political authority.

There are three content areas on anarchism:
1. Anarchism: core ideas and principles
2. Different types of anarchism
3. Anarchist thinkers and their ideas.

In the Chiapas region of Mexico, local communities live with high levels of poverty as well as a lack of education and health care - 1990s the gov ended its commitment to land reform based on community-owned land and signed up to NAFTA -> an agreement with US and Canada which forced millions of peasants to become cheap labour in the industrial workforce - The Zapatistas rose up on the same day and took control of major population centres - The project was built on the idea of autonomy and community, they believe decisions should be made at the local level - Still a relevant political force in the region today
For anarchists, the state should be rejected as it is: 1. Commanding - state can force an individual to act in a way they would not have done voluntarily - this forces individuals to give up their reason and autonomy - a person is seen as being able to flourish once the state is rejected 2. Controlling - authority exerts control over people and therefore is seen as stifling creativity and initiatitve - stops people thinking for themselves 3. Corrupting - anarchists view political authority in any form as corrupting to human nature - those with authority are raised above the masses causing the loss of their morals
Collectivists see humans as rational, but emphasise that human nature is altruistic and co-operative -> an individual can only be free when all are free to realise their potential -> liberty under capitalism is seen as impossible, liberty can only be achieved when individuals are treat each other equally and have an equal economic position
State in any form unjustifiable leading to split between Marxism and anarchism - Individualist anarchists -> state parasite that robs citizens through taxation backed up by the threat of force - Collectivist anarchists -> state develops as a body that protects private property and the inequalities between the wealthy and the masses - State controlled by the wealthy who are willing to use protect their priveledge with any force necessary
