One of the three main types of ground tissue that makes up the supporting tissue in plants. Two types of this tissue exist: 1) fibres and 2) sclereids. Their cells consist of thick secondary cell wall composed of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. They are the principal supporting cells in plant tissues that have ceased elongation. These cells also have great economic importance, since they constitute the source material for many fabrics (e.g. flax, hemp, jute, and ramie).
