Tasks of a Hospital Housekeeper

- removing medical waste from surgery and exam rooms, cleaning windows, keeping foot-traffic areas clear, changing bed sheets, sweeping and vacuuming floors, mopping up spills, emptying trash receptacles, and removing debris from hallways.

- removing obstacles, sweep up debris, disinfect surfaces and equipment, change and launder linens, and attend to a variety of other housekeeping tasks that ensure the hospital is safe and sterile.

A housekeeping supervisor at a hospital organizes all of the housekeeping and janitorial staff, makes sure all cleaning supplies are readily available, and takes responsibility for hiring and terminating staff members in their department.

Housekeeping supervisors must understand all the procedures of hospital cleaning and the use of all basic cleaning equipment.

They coordinate the janitors and housekeepers, sending them to rooms and areas where they are needed the most, and inspect all areas to ensure they follow all sanitation standards.

If  their staff is not meeting the hospital’s standards, it is their responsibility to retrain housekeeping employees and have them reclean the area until it is satisfactory. Housekeeping supervisors need several years of experience in the field before applying.

 

Hospital Housekeeper course contents, in brief:

  1. Identify hospital housekeeping services and activities.    
  2. Maintain high standards of cleanliness throughout the hospital, all rooms and areas.    
  3. Identify all hospital services and activities.
  4. Ensure all patient and team members’ laundry and dry cleaning is processed in accordance with hospital procedures, charges are raised and documentation completed for hospital audit procedures.    
  5. Order, receive and issue cleaning materials and carry out stock takes as required.
  6. Adhere strictly to security procedures laid down by the hospital including keys, stock, cash and property.    
  7. Ensure all housekeeping equipment is used safely and effectively and on all occasions, safe and hygienic working practices in order to satisfy Health and Safety at Work and other statutory legislation.    
  8. Adhere strictly to fire procedure precautions and bomb threat procedures as laid down standards in order to satisfy statutory legislation.    
  9. Adhere strictly to Health Safety procedures.
