The Vikings made a series of raids on and invasions of Britain between the 8th Century and the 11th. They came from Norway, Sweden and Denmark, otherwise known as Scandinavia. This lies to the North of Europe, which is where the alternative name for Viking culture, Norse, comes from. Norse attackers raided Lindisfarne, the monastery that held Saint Cuthbert's relics.
