A mechanical draftsman prepares drawings of machines, plants, mechanical components, and equipment. They use sketches, notes, data, or samples to create these drawings for manufacturing or repairs.
Mechanical draftsmen also prepare layouts that show the details for a variety of machinery and mechanical tools and devices, such as medical equipment. These layouts indicate dimensions, fastening methods, and other requirements needed for assembly. Mechanical draftsmen sometimes create production molds. Mechanical draftsmen use Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software to create and modify 2D mechanical engineering designs.
