The association between asthma and croup seems to be based on the presence of hyperreactive airways and less on the presence of atopy, although atopy can be considered an aggravating factor. (van bever 1999). In this case there still may be an association, beacsuse both viral croup and recurrent croup are associated with bronchial asthma. Moshammer et al (2006) found that there is a 40% increase in the risk of 'poor lung function' in children exposed to passive smoke.
