Investigations= air enema: diagnostic and therapeutic. 80-90% cases reduced successfully. Us: target sign: accurate diagnosis without undue exposure to radiation xray= -paucity of gas/contrast in the intussuscepted segment. -soft tissue mass -obstructive pattern â€“ proximal dilatation, air fluid levels. Explanation= sliding of one portion of bowel into other, like a telescope. To fix it, we put a hose into their bowel via the rectum and gently reinflate while watching the telescope resolve on an xray machine. (like a glove finger when you blow it out again). The main risk is perforating the bowel 2%. Contraindications are signs of peritonism/sepsis/hypovolaemia (ischemic bowel) or any free gas under diaphragm on axr suggesting perforated bowel.
