In persistent asthma there are symptoms between episodes. Only persistent asthma is graded in severity mild mod or severe. Spirometry is linked to the severity based on fev1 scores of >80%. 60-80% or less than 60% for increasing severity. Intermittent asthma has normal fev1 spirometry of over 80% between episodes. Persistent asthma is treated with inhaled corticosteroids as symptom preventers and the bronchodilator drugs. All asthma regardless of severity should be treated with avoidance of triggers/enviro control (in 6 point plan), with fabas (fast acting beta agonists) on demand and the development of a management plan that allows the patient a normal functional life on the minimal medication possible.
