Threshold for fluids after burns is 10-12% for children and 15-20% tbsa for adults. After burns the highest rate of fluid loss occurs in the first 8 hours and tapers off. Remember that the parklands formula (2-4ml per %tbsa per kg over 24 hours) is not a magic formula. You still need your clinical judgement, and you need to add maintenance fluids to this formula as it is considered to be the resus/rehydration fluids. The key is to reassess hydration, especially urine output aimed at a minimum 1ml/kg/hr
