⏱️ ~3 min read

Window: Campus placements • Lateral interviews • Consulting/Analytics cases
Components: HR/Behavioral • Case (structured problem solving) • Communication & Presence

Must-do topics (80/20)

HR / Behavioral

  • Story bank (8 themes): leadership, teamwork, conflict, failure/learning, initiative/ownership, influencing w/o authority, ambiguity, ethics.
  • Framework: STAR / CAR / SOAR (Situation/Task → Action → Result; add Outcome/Reflection).
  • Metrics: quantify impact (₹, %, time saved, NPS, uptime).

Case Interviews

  • Clarify objective & constraints; restate problem.
  • Structure (MECE issue tree): don’t memorize; customize to prompt.
  • Core families: Profitability, Market entry, Pricing, Growth, Ops/Process, PE/Deal, Public sector/Non-profit.
  • Math without calc: % change, contribution margin/break-even, market sizing (top-down/bottom-up).
  • Exhibits: TAUSL for charts; say what the data means for the hypothesis.
  • Synthesize: answer first → 2–3 reasons → risk/next step.

Top traps (avoid)

  • Rambling; no answer first.
  • Jumping into ideas before confirming goal & scope.
  • Forcing a prefab framework; missing driver.
  • Sloppy math; wrong units; no sanity check.
  • Ignoring risks / implementation.
  • HR stories that are task lists, not actions + outcomes.

Time split (prep week)

  • HR (40%): build/refine 10 stories; rehearse out loud.
  • Cases (50%): 1–2 live cases/day (peer/coach) + 15–20 min mental math.
  • Industry read (10%): 1 page/day of sector primers (cost/revenue drivers).

Last-48h checklist

  • HR: 10 STAR cards with numbers; 2 tight intros (“Tell me about yourself” 60–90 sec; “Why this role” 45–60 sec).
  • Cases: 3 drills—Profitability, Market Sizing, Exhibit interpretation.
  • Math: %–fraction pairs, markup vs margin, break-even =FixedPrice−Var=\frac{\text{Fixed}}{\text{Price−Var}}=Price−VarFixed.
  • Mock: 1 HR + 1 case; record & review open–structure–math–synthesis.

Quick frames & mini-toolkit

HR Openers

  • Pitch: “I’m a ___ with ___ yrs; I solve ___ problems. Recently, I ___ (impact). I’m excited about ___ because ___.”
  • STAR depth: Action = 70% of story; Result = numbers + learning.

Case Structures (flexible)

  • Profitability: Revenue (Price × Volume: mix, segments, channel) vs Costs (Var/Fixed; scale; utilization).
  • Market Entry: Market (size/growth), Customer/Need, Competition, Company (capabilities), Go-to-Market (channel, pricing), Risks.
  • Operations: Map process → bottlenecks → levers (eliminate waste, reduce variability, increase capacity, improve yield).
  • Public Sector: Stakeholders, Need/Outcome, Options (cost-effect), Risk, Implementation.

Market Sizing

  • Top-down: population → segment % → penetration → usage × price.
  • Bottom-up: units per outlet × outlets × price. Sanity check with both.

Mental Math

  • Round smart (99≈100, 2.99≈3) then adjust.
  • % change ≈ Δbase\frac{\Delta}{\text{base}}baseΔ; Rule of 72 for doubling time.
  • Margin vs Markup: Margin =P−CP=\frac{P−C}{P}=PP−C; Markup =P−CC=\frac{P−C}{C}=CP−C.

Exhibit Reading (TAUSL)

  • Title • Axes • Units • Scale • Legend → what this implies for decision.

Synthesis Template (answer first)

  • Recommendation: Do X. Because: 1) ___, 2) ___, 3) ___. Risks: ___. Next: ___ (pilot/analysis/partner).”

Speed tactics (in interview)

  • Pause to structure (15–30 s) after clarifying the goal.
  • Think aloud: show logic, not just answers.
  • Signpost: “I’ll look at demand, then costs.”
  • Check math aloud; do a quick reality check.
  • Close strong: summary + risk + next step + ask if they want a deep dive.

Interview-day mini-plans

HR (30–40 min)

  1. Warm intro (60–90 s).
  2. Stories mapped to job competencies (2–3).
  3. Ask smart questions (role success, ramp plan, team culture).
  4. Close with interest & fit.

Case (30–45 min)

  1. Clarify & restate objective.
  2. Structure (issue tree) on paper; confirm with interviewer.
  3. Prioritize branch; run numbers; read exhibits (TAUSL).
  4. Synthesize periodically; final answer-first close with risks/next steps.

Questions to ask

  • “What does success in 90 days look like for this role?”
  • “Where has the team seen the biggest bottlenecks recently?”
  • “If we pursue this recommendation, what’s the first pilot you’d run?”

Red flags to avoid

  • Speaking without a point; defensive tone; blaming teammates; no self-reflection; not asking any questions.
