The series consist of numbers which move in a pattern following some of the rules on a uniform basis.

Important points to remember:
Generally the first or the last number is not wrong in odd man out.
Find the pattern to find the odd figure out
Always check the next number in the series whether it suits the pattern or not.

Majority of the series consist of Prime numbers, squares, cubes, multiples, product or divisibility tests. Hence these should be tested before finding any pattern.
If the series contains ups and downs - there are chances that the series contains double series.
If the numbers are + ve or - ve alternatively, the role of double series or multiplication/division by - ve factors may exist.
If the series moves up or down slowly, role of addition or subtraction may exist.
If the series rises or falls role of multiplication/division may exist.
