Breathing and Exchange of Gases topics include: Respiration and its types, mammals respiratory system, respiratory organs, respiration mechanism, pulmonary air volumes and lung capacities, gases exchange, blood transport in respiratory gases, respiration and respiratory disorders control.

Breathing is the process of inhaling oxygen-rich air and exhaling carbon dioxide-rich air. The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide is called gas exchange. This process is essential for life.
Gas exchange occurs in the lungs and the tiny blood vessels called capillaries. The lungs and respiratory system automatically perform this process.

Here's what happens during gas exchange:
When you inhale, oxygen from the air moves into your blood.
At the same time, carbon dioxide moves from your blood into your lungs.
Your bloodstream carries the carbon dioxide back to your lungs.
Your lungs remove the carbon dioxide from your bloodstream and you exhale.

The diaphragm, intercostal muscles, and abdominal muscles play an important role in breathing and gas exchange.
