Embryology is the study of the development of an embryo from fertilization to the fetal stage.

The four stages of embryonic development are:
Stage 1: Fertilization
Stage 2: Blastocyst development and implantation
Stage 3: Embryo development
Stage 4: Fetal development

In humans, the term "embryo" is used until the end of the seventh week after conception. After that, the unborn child is called a fetus.
Comparative embryology is a branch of embryology that compares embryos of different species to show how animals are related.
Gastrulation is a complex process that involves the embryo reorganizing itself to create the three embryonic germ layers: endoderm, mesoderm, and ectoderm.
