Highway construction is a civil engineering process that involves the construction, repair, or alteration of highways, streets, roads, alleys, parking areas, runways, and paths. Highway construction also includes locate, supervise, and map an area for a highway. 

Highway construction contractors are responsible for:
Designing and building new roads
Repairing and maintaining existing roads
Ensuring the transportation infrastructure is safe and efficient for all users 

Some types of highway construction include:

Concrete roads: A durable, long-lasting surface made by mixing Portland cement, sand, coarse aggregate, and water. Concrete roads are not easily damaged by things like cracks, ruts, and potholes.
Rigid pavements: A pavement type that uses concrete slabs with or without steel bars. Rigid pavements have sufficient flexural strength to transmit the stresses of the wheels over a wider area underneath.
Paving: The last major construction activity before the road can open to traffic. Paving creates a smoother, faster, and more reliable journey.
