An Embedded System is a system that has electronic hardware with software tightly coupled together. Processor, Timers, Interrupt controller, I/O Subsystem, Memories, Ports, etc. Single 8 bit or 16bit Microcontroller. Low hardware and software complexity.

Embedded systems are often programmed using embedded C.

Some examples of embedded systems include:  Digital watches, Washing machines, Toys, Televisions, Digital phones, Laser printers, Cameras, Industrial machines.

Embedded systems can be classified into four categories based on performance and functional requirements:

  1. Real-time embedded systems
  2. Standalone embedded systems
  3. Network, or networked, embedded systems
  4. Mobile embedded systems
