The division of the Church into the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church. Fueled by worsening relations between the popes and princes of western Europe. In the ninth century, the patriarchs of Constantinople challenged the territorial jurisdiction of the popes of Rome and the practices of the Latin Church. Culminated in a formal split. Arguments included ecclesiastical differences and theological disputes.
