Here are some tips for managing multiple casualty incidents (MCI) as an EMT:
Establish command:
Take control of the situation as soon as possible to start triage and transporting patients
Use the Incident Command System (ICS): This structure includes a medical component that covers triage, treatment, transportation, and staging
Use triage tape and/or tags: Tag patients early to help track them and their condition
Re-assess patients: Perform secondary triage (re-triage) when patients enter a staging area
Use checkpoints and reminder cards: Keep radio traffic brief, clear, and necessary
Notify hospitals early: Keep them updated on the situation
Preserve vehicle ingress and egress routes: Never leave patients without other assistance
Prepare an ambulance: Make a list of what to fully stock, such as assessment tools, disposable items, trauma dressings, personal protection equipment, and emergency medications
Sanitize: Clean and sanitize the ambulance's interior of potentially harmful fluids, debris, tissues, and pathogens
Charge and replace batteries: Perform a power check on battery-powered devices
