In 1986 Elie Wiesel won the Nobel Peace Prize. In large part, the award recognized his effort to tell the story of the Holocaust. It was absolutely necessary to give voice to the traumatized survivors, who for nearly two decades had appeared to be frozen in silence. It was also necessary to address ___, who were saddled with guilt for not having done more to save their brethren.

Peace studies is an interdisciplinary academic field that draws on political science, sociology, history, anthropology, theology, psychology, philosophy, and other fields to:

understand the causes of armed conflict;
develop ways to prevent and resolve war, genocide, terrorism, gross violations of human rights; and
build peaceful and just systems and societies.
