First, you’d look for site factors—the physical traits of a place that make it good for settling. A flat, fertile river valley (like the Nile in Egypt) gives you water, food, and easy farming. A natural harbor (like San Francisco Bay) lets ships dock safely, so trade can happen. But if you pick a swampy, flood-prone spot (like early New Orleans), you’ll spend all your money on levees instead of schools.

Then, you’d think about situation factors—how your town connects to other places. Is it near a mountain pass (like Denver, which became a railroad hub)? On a trade route (like Timbuktu in West Africa)? Or stuck in the middle of nowhere (like Australia’s Outback towns, which rely on long, expensive supply chains)? A great site with a terrible situation (like a lush valley with no roads) is like a phone with no signal—useless.

Once people settle, they need transport networks to move stuff. Roads, railroads, and canals act like the circulatory system of a city. A grid of streets (like in Manhattan) makes navigation easy, while winding medieval roads (like in London) cause traffic jams.
