Lateral reading is doing the same thing with information online. Instead of staying on one website and trusting it blindly, you open new tabs to see what other reliable sources say about the same claim. This is how fact-checkers work: they don’t read down a page (like scrolling through one article), they read across the web (like comparing multiple sources).

Here’s how it works in practice: You land on a site called HealthyLivingToday.com that says, "New study proves video games cause ADHD." Instead of reading the whole article, you: 1. Open a new tab and search "video games ADHD study site:.gov" (the site:.gov trick filters for government sources).
2. Check Wikipedia—not for the answer, but for the citations at the bottom. If the claim is real, there should be links to actual studies.
3. Look for fact-checks by searching "video games ADHD fact check" on Snopes or PolitiFact.
4. Compare headlines—if only HealthyLivingToday is reporting this, it’s a red flag.

2. I’d check ScienceDaily.com or AP News to see if reputable science journalists reported on it.
3. I’d look for fact-checks on FactCheck.org or The Washington Post. If the claim is exaggerated, they’d say so.
Why this works: The student names specific, credible sources and explains their reasoning—showing they’re not just Googling randomly.


4. Mistake Taxonomy

Mistake 1: The "One-Source Wonder"
Prompt: "A website says ‘The Earth is flat.’ How would you verify this?" Common wrong response: "I’d read the whole article on the flat-Earth site to see if it makes sense." Why it loses credit: This is vertical reading—staying on one site instead of checking others. The student doesn’t demonstrate lateral reading.
Correct approach: - Search "Earth shape site:.gov" to find NASA or NOAA’s explanations.
- Check National Geographic or BBC Earth for videos showing Earth from space.
- Look for fact-checks on PolitiFact or Snopes. If only conspiracy sites are reporting it, it’s false.
