Imagine your kitchen table. The top of the table is flat like a piece of paper—you can trace its shape with your finger, but you can’t pick it up like a block. That’s a 2D shape: it only has length and width, like the squares on a checkerboard or the triangles in a yield sign. Now pick up a cereal box. You can turn it in your hands, feel its corners, and even stack another box on top. That’s a 3D shape: it has length, width, and height, like a can of soup or a shoebox.

Pointer: The new flat sides are 2D (like the inside of a sliced apple), but the whole half-cube is still 3D. If you keep cutting, you’ll end up with tiny 3D pieces—like crumbling a cookie into crumbs. But if you flatten the crumbs (like pressing them into dough), you’re making 2D again!
