"If you and your friend both build a tower with the same number of blocks, why does yours look taller? And how can you prove it’s not just your imagination—without counting the blocks again?"
Imagine you’re at the playground with two jump ropes. One is the red rope you use for double-dutch, and the other is the blue rope your little brother tries to skip with. You lay them side by side on the ground, and even though they’re both jump ropes, the red one stretches farther. That’s because length is how long something is from one end to the other—like how far your arm can reach when you stretch it out.
To compare lengths, you don’t need a ruler yet. You can line things up at the same starting point (like the edge of the sidewalk) and see which one sticks out farther. If they’re the same, they’re equal in length. If one is longer, you can say it’s longer than the other. And if you want to measure how much longer, you can use something small and consistent—like your shoe, a paperclip, or a building block—as a unit to count how many fit along the length.
Key Vocabulary:- Length – How long something is from one end to the other. Example: The length of your lunchbox is how far it stretches from the zipper to the handle.- Compare – To look at two things side by side to see which is longer, shorter, or the same. Example: Comparing the length of your pencil to your crayon to see which one fits better in your pencil case.- Unit – A small, same-size object used to measure length (like a paperclip or your finger). Example: Measuring the length of your desk by lining up erasers end-to-end.- Equal – When two lengths are the same. Example: Two pencils that are the same size when you line them up tip-to-tip.
How this appears in class:- Exit tickets: "Draw two lines. Label one ‘longer’ and one ‘shorter.’ Explain how you know." - Show-your-work problems: "Use these 3 blocks to measure the length of your book. How many blocks long is it?" - Hands-on tasks: "Find something in the classroom that is longer than your shoe but shorter than your arm."
What a "proficient" response looks like:- Developing: Draws two lines but doesn’t label them or explain. Measures with blocks but leaves gaps between them.- Proficient: Draws two lines, labels them correctly, and writes, "I know the blue line is longer because it sticks out past the red line when I line them up at the start." Measures the book with blocks, keeping them straight and touching, and writes, "My book is 5 blocks long."
Model response (proficient):Prompt: "Is the green crayon longer or shorter than the yellow crayon? How do you know?" Response: "The green crayon is longer. I lined them up at the bottom, and the green one sticks out past the yellow one. I can see the extra part at the top."
Mistake 1: Not lining things up at the start.- Prompt: "Which is longer, the pencil or the marker?" - Wrong response: "The marker is longer because it’s bigger." (Doesn’t line them up.) - Why it loses credit: The student didn’t compare the lengths directly. "Bigger" could mean thicker, not longer.- Correct approach: Lay the pencil and marker side by side at the same starting point (like the edge of a table). The one that sticks out farther is longer.
Mistake 2: Gaps or overlaps when measuring with units.- Prompt: "Use these paperclips to measure the length of your folder. How many paperclips long is it?" - Wrong response: "4 paperclips" (but leaves big gaps between them or overlaps them).- Why it loses credit: The units aren’t consistent—gaps or overlaps make the count wrong.- Correct approach: Line up the paperclips end-to-end with no gaps or overlaps. Count how many fit along the edge of the folder.
Mistake 3: Confusing "longer" and "taller."- Prompt: "Is the bookshelf taller or longer than the door?" - Wrong response: "The bookshelf is longer because it’s big." (Doesn’t notice the bookshelf is vertical.) - Why it loses credit: The student didn’t pay attention to the direction of the length (horizontal vs. vertical).- Correct approach: For "taller," compare how high things go (like from the floor to the top of the door). For "longer," compare how far they stretch side to side (like the width of the bookshelf).
"If you measure your desk with your hand and your friend measures the same desk with their hand, why might you get different answers? Is one of you wrong—or is there a way to fix it?"
Pointer toward the answer: The problem isn’t who’s "right"—it’s that hands aren’t the same size! If you both used the same unit (like a ruler or a book), your answers would match. This is why grown-ups use standard units like inches or centimeters: so everyone gets the same answer, no matter whose hand they use.
