The nervous system is made up of the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system:
Central nervous system: The brain and spinal cord
Peripheral nervous system: All other nerves in the body 

The nervous system responds to sensory input by sending signals to muscles and glands. Muscles and glands are called effectors because they respond to the nervous system's directions. 
The basic unit of the nervous system is a nerve cell, or neuron. There are three broad functional classifications of nerves: Sensory (afferent), Intermediate, Motor (efferent).
