The short field answer:
Evacuation is not just “pulling a vacuum.” It is removing air, non-condensables, and moisture deeply enough that the system can operate without acid formation, ice, high head pressure, oil damage, or shortened compressor life. OEM guidance commonly targets about 500 microns or lower and then verifies system tightness and dryness with a standing rise test.

Trane states plainly that after evacuation you should perform a standing rise test and that excessive rise indicates either a leak or moisture remaining in the system. Danfoss explains why this matters: moisture and air increase condensing pressure, raise discharge temperature, damage oil, promote acid formation and copper plating, and can lead to mechanical or electrical compressor failure. Danfoss also says that if a refrigerant system has been opened, it should be flushed with dry air or nitrogen and fitted with a new filter-drier. 

Two common exam traps:
EPA’s own test topics say hermetic compressors should not be energized under vacuum. Copeland also warns that using a closed service-valve “how low can it pull” test is not a good compressor test and can damage a scroll in seconds. 

Fast memory line:
A deep vacuum number is only half the job. The rise test tells you whether the vacuum means anything.
