Introduction

What is NATE Certification?
North American Technician Excellence (NATE) is the HVACR industry's gold standard credential, recognized across North America as the definitive mark of a knowledgeable and skilled technician . Unlike brand-specific or regional certifications, NATE is vendor-neutral and validates real-world competence in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration . For technicians, NATE certification signals professionalism, advanced training, and a commitment to quality workmanship—qualities that employers prioritize and customers trust .

The NATE Certification Pathway
Technicians pursuing NATE certification follow a two-exam pathway: the Core Exam and a Specialty Exam of their choice . Some candidates may also start with entry-level credentials like the Ready-to-Work Certificate or HVAC Support Technician Certificate before advancing .

The Core Exam (50 questions) tests general HVACR knowledge across essential domains:
Safety (personal, refrigerant, electrical, worksite)
Tools (identification, selection, safe use)
Basic construction
Using basic science (heat transfer, refrigeration cycle)
Achieving desired conditions
Temperature and humidity measurements
Basic electrical theory and components

Specialty Exams (100 questions) allow technicians to specialize in areas such as:
Air Conditioning Service and Installation
Air-to-Air Heat Pump Service and Installation
Gas Heating Service and Installation
Oil Heating Service and Installation
Commercial Refrigeration
Hydronics Gas and Hydronics Oil
Specialties are offered at Installation, Service, and Senior certification levels .
