Antifungal agents, listed below, are used to treat fungal infections, such as athlete’s foot and candidiasis (thrush). They can also be used to treat more complicated conditions such as aspergillosis and blastomycosis. Some antifungal drugs are found over-the-counter, while others require prescriptions. Long-term antifungal use requires monitoring of the liver functions and enzymes due to the potential for liver toxicity. Patients with CHF should not use itraconazole due to enzyme inhibition. Therapy may last a few weeks to several months depending on the type of fungal infection.
