Dermatological agents may be identified by recognizing prefixes and suffixes used in USAN stem names.
The table below lists commonly used stems for dermatological agents that are recognized by the USAN Council.

Tip:
Determining a days supply for creams and ointments may require making estimates. Looking at the package size, application amount, frequency of administration, and application area can help you determine an accurate representation of the days supply.

Table: USAN Stems for Dermatological Agents

Stem Description Example
-cort Cortisone derivative hydrocortisone
-olone Steroids triamcinolone
-onide Steroids fluocinonide
sulfa- Antimicrobial (sulfonamide derivative) silver sulfadiazine
-vir Antiviral acyclovir

Dermatological agents, such as those listed in the table below are used to treat a variety of skin conditions, including acne, burns, itching, infections, rashes, and psoriasis. Most agents can be applied topically to the site of the irritation or condition. Topical agents have fewer side effects because they are not absorbed systemically. The effect of the topical agent is contained to the application site. Potential side effects include irritation, dryness, and redness. The drug isotretinoin is an oral acne agent that is reserved for the treatment of cystic acne. Isotretinoin prescribing is restricted due to the teratogenic effects of this drug. To ensure that a medication’s benefits outweigh its risks, the FDA created a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS) program called iPLEDGE to mitigate adverse events. The patient, prescriber, and pharmacy must be registered through the iPLEDGE program, which requires the patient to follow monthly precautions and guidelines.
