Lean manufacturing is a methodology that aims to maximize productivity while minimizing waste in manufacturing systems. Waste is defined as anything that customers don't believe adds value and aren't willing to pay for.

The core principle of lean is to reduce and eliminate non-value adding activities and waste.

Some guiding principles of lean development are:
Eliminate waste
Build quality in
Create knowledge
Defer commitment
Deliver fast
Respect people
Optimize the whole

Lean manufacturing is closely related to just-in-time manufacturing (JIT manufacturing).

The lean manufacturing cycle has five steps:
Identify value
Map the value stream
Create flow
Establish pull
Strive for perfection

Continuous improvement is a core principle of lean manufacturing. It's also known as “kaizen,” which translates to “changing something for the better” in Japanese. Lean manufacturers use kaizen to help eliminate waste.
Total productive maintenance (TPM) is an approach that involves training all operators in a manufacturing facility to be able to diagnose when their machinery needs maintenance. This helps prevent breakdowns and malfunctions.

Topics include: Wastes Seven Types, Bottleneck Analysis, Five Lean Principles, Cellular Manufacturing , SMART Goals & VSM.
