Sentence Correction Each question includes a sentence with part of it underlined. Your answer choices will offer different ways to reword or rephrase the underlined portion of the sentence. The first answer choice merely repeats the original underlined text, while the others offer different wording. These questions will test your ability of correct and effective expression. Choose your answer carefully, utilizing the standards of written English, including grammar rules, the proper choice of words and of sentence construction. The correct answer will flow smoothly and be both clear and concise.
Construction Shift Each question starts with a sentence that you will be asked to rewrite. You will be given a short phrase with which to begin the rewritten sentence, and then asked to select the best phrase to continue, or sometimes even complete, the new sentence so that it retains the meaning of the original sentence.
Choose your answer carefully, utilizing the standards of written English, including grammar rules, the proper choice of words and of sentence construction. The correct answer will flow smoothly in a simple, clear, and concise manner.
The best strategy for tackling this part is to read the original sentence and the start of the new sentence you must create, and decide what would be the simplest way to complete the sentence, before you look at any of the answer choices. Once you look at the answer choices, it's easy to become confused and second-guess yourself, but 90% of the time, the simplest way you can think of to rewrite the sentence will be among the choices (and will be correct). Typically, the rewriting will involve changing a dependent clause into an independent clause, or vice versa.
