(3) So, what gives this statue its famous green hue? (4) The answer may surprise you. (5) The Statue of Liberty is made of copper, a malleable metal that has a variety of uses. (6) Copper is commonly used to make coins, pipes, wires, and even musical instruments. (7) In most cases, copper metal starts out as a bronze color. (8) However, if left exposed to the elements, copper can turn a pale green color through a process called patina. (9) Patina occurs when copper reacts with water and oxygen in the atmosphere.
