A Fatskills Exam Survival Guide: what to focus on, what to avoid, and how to get through test day without panicking.

Window: Global | Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking

Must-do topics

  • Listening: map/diagram labeling, form completion, multiple choice with synonyms
  • Reading: true/false/not given, headings match, paragraph location, flow chart
  • Writing Task 1: describe trends, comparisons, key features; 150+ words
  • Writing Task 2: argument/opinion/problem-solution; 250+ words, clear stance
  • Speaking: part-wise pacing; fluency, range, accuracy, and pronunciation

Top traps (avoid)

  • Listening: spelling/plural errors; missing word-limit instruction
  • Reading: treating “not given” as “false”; not scanning for synonyms
  • Writing: Task 1 opinions or “reasons why”—stick to reporting data
  • Task 2: drifting stance; weak paragraphing and cohesion
  • Speaking: memorized answers; rushing without intonation or linking

Time split

  • Listening: 30 min (+10 min paper transfer / on-screen review)
  • Reading: 60 min (3 passages) → 20/20/20 with easier first
  • Writing: 60 min → Task 2 (40 min) then Task 1 (20 min)
  • Speaking: 11–14 min → Part 2: plan 1 min, speak ~2 min

Last-48h checklist

  • Drill common paraphrases (increase/decline, proportion, fluctuate, outnumber)
  • 1 full reading set; analyze synonyms in correct choices
  • Task 1: write 2 reports (line + bar); Task 2: 1 essay with strong intro + topic sentences
  • Speaking: rehearse 6 cue cards; practice linking (however, moreover, as a result)

Quick facts

  • Band scores reward coherence & lexical resource as much as grammar
  • Task 2 > Task 1 for weight; finish Task 2 even if Task 1 is imperfect
  • Charts: overview paragraph = 1–2 big trends before details
  • Listening answers are sequential—don’t backtrack too long

Speed tactics

  • Reading: skim headings first; underline names, dates, terms; scan per question
  • Writing: Task 2 template → Position → Reason 1 → Reason 2 → Counter/Example → Close
  • Speaking: buy time phrases (“From my experience…”, “One example is…”)
  • Listening: predict word type (noun/number/verb) before the blank

Day-of mini-plan

  • 10-min chart verbs warm-up (soar, dip, plateau, surge…)
  • Keep an eye on word limits; don’t overwrite Task 1 at the cost of Task 2
  • Steady pace; if stuck, move—no negative marking
