Introduction

The National Evaluation Series, or NES, Essential Academic Skills test contains a series of subtests covering reading, writing, math, and technology literacy. Each subtest on the NES Academic Skills test is multiple choice with the exception of the writing exam which has a written assignment. Scores from these exams can be used to gain an entry-level teaching certification in multiple states.

NES Essential Academic Skills Reading Subtest 1 (001)
The Reading Subtest of the National Evaluation Series Essential Academic Skills, or NES 001, covers five key competencies related to reading and reading comprehension. Test takers will have to demonstrate this knowledge with about 45 multiple-choice questions.

Words and Phrases: Competency one of the NES 001 requires test takers to demonstrate their understanding of reading skills such as context, figurative language, and appropriate word usage.
Main Ideas and Supporting Details: The second competency of the 001 NES exam tests the exam taker's ability to find and understand the main idea of a passage and identify supporting ideas.
Writer's Purpose and Audience: The next competency has questions covering finding and understanding the purpose of a written passage and exploring reasons for the author's tone.
Critical Reasoning Skills: Competency four includes questions on identifying cause-and-effect, finding stated and implied conclusions, and writer bias.
Written and Graphic Information Organization: This final competency tests knowledge of organizing both written paragraphs and passages that employ visual imagery.

NES Essential Academic Skills Writing Subtest 2 (002)
The written subtest of the NES Essential Skills exam, or NES 002, tests candidates' ability to understand and demonstrate key writing skills with four competencies. Test takers complete about 36 multiple-choice questions and one written assignment.

Purpose, Audience, Organization, and Development: This first competency of the NES Essentials writing test has questions including identifying effective writing skills for a given task and revising work for cohesion and clarity.
Issues in Sentence Formation: The second competency of the NES writing test requires test takers to find issues in sentence construction such as fragments, subject-verb agreement, and inappropriate word usage.
Standard Written English Grammar: Competency three includes tasks such as identifying and editing grammatical errors, American spellings, punctuation, and capitalization.
Written Assignment: The final competency is a writing assignment where test takers will have to use Standard Written English and employ the above-tested knowledge to create a clear and cohesive passage.

NES Essential Academic Skills Mathematics Subtest 3 (003): Practice & Study Guide
The NES Essential Academic Skills test math subtest, or NES 003, has about 45 multiple-choice questions that require test takers to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of five key areas of math.

Number Priorities and Number Operations: The first competency of the NES Essential Skills test on math has test takers show their knowledge of aspects of math such as place value, ways of representing and expressing fractions, and problem solving with different numbers.
Principles of Algebra: Competency two of the NES 003 test requires knowledge of basic algebra including algebraic expressions, solving equations, and graphing.
Measurement and Geometry: The third competency of the NES 003 covers math skills such as employing different units to solve problems, using the Pythagorean Theorem, and solving problems using basic geometry.
Probability and Statistics: Competency four of the NES Essential Skills test on math requires knowledge of probability and statistics including calculating probability, using visual representations of data, and analyzing data with statistics.
Problem Solving and Reasoning: The final competency of the NES 003 exam includes problems using algorithms, estimating solutions, and deductive reasoning.

NES Essential Academic Skills Technology Literacy Subtest 4 (004)
The Technology Literacy subtest of the NES Essential Academic Skills exam tests technological literacy and skills. This NES Basic Skills Test has about 36 multiple-choice questions where candidates will have to demonstrate knowledge of two competency areas.

Computer Operations and Software: The first competency of the NES 004 exam includes questions on basic computer terminology, file management, word-processing tools, and data organization.
Technology for Research and Communication: Competency two of the NES 004 test requires knowledge of internet terminology, online ethics and safety, ways of finding and evaluating information, and presentation software.
