The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) is a three-step examination for medical licensure in the United States and is sponsored by the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME).
The USMLE Step 1 exam is a computer-based test taken in a single day over an eight hour period. It's a multiple choice question test that includes seven sections of up to 40 questions each for a total of up to 280 questions. One hour is allotted for each of the seven sections.
Step 1 includes test items in the following content areas: anatomy, behavioral sciences, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, interdisciplinary topics, such as nutrition, genetics, and aging.
