What It Is

Articles are words that modify nouns in English. They help us know which noun we are talking about. There are three types of articles: A/An, The, and Zero Article. ESL learners often struggle with articles because their first language may not have the same system.

Key Rules

  • A/An is used before a singular noun that starts with a consonant sound. Example: I have a book. (book starts with a "b" sound)
  • A/An is used before a singular noun that starts with a vowel sound. Example: I have an apple. (apple starts with a "a" sound)
  • The is used before a noun that is specific or has been mentioned before. Example: I'm reading the book you recommended. (book has been mentioned before)
  • The is used before a noun that starts with a vowel sound and is singular. Example: I have the egg. (egg starts with a "e" sound)
  • The is used before a noun that is plural and starts with a consonant sound. Example: I have the cats. (cats start with a "c" sound)
  • Zero Article is used before a noun that is general or has not been mentioned before. Example: I like coffee. (coffee is a general noun)
  • Zero Article is used before a noun that is uncountable. Example: I love music. (music is an uncountable noun)
  • Zero Article is used before a noun that is a plural noun and starts with a vowel sound. Example: I have eggs. (eggs start with an "e" sound)
  • Zero Article is used before a noun that is a plural noun and is a general term. Example: I like dogs. (dogs is a general term)
  • A/An is not used before a noun that starts with a vowel sound and is plural. Example: I have apples. (apples start with an "a" sound)
  • The is not used before a noun that is singular and starts with a vowel sound. Example: I have a apple. (apple starts with an "a" sound)
  • The is not used before a noun that is plural and starts with a vowel sound. Example: I have eggs. (eggs start with an "e" sound)
  • A/An is not used before a noun that is specific or has been mentioned before. Example: I'm reading the book. (book has been mentioned before)
  • Zero Article is not used before a noun that is specific or has been mentioned before. Example: I'm reading the book. (book has been mentioned before)

Common ESL Errors

  • Error: I have a eggs.
Why it happens: Interference from L1, overgeneralization of A/An rule.
Correction: I have eggs. (no article is needed because eggs is a plural noun)
  • Error: I'm reading the book.
Why it happens: Overgeneralization of The rule.
Correction: I'm reading a book. (no article is needed because book is a singular noun)
  • Error: I like the coffee.
Why it happens: Overgeneralization of The rule.
Correction: I like coffee. (no article is needed because coffee is a general noun)
